How to Edit True Bayer RAW Photos in Lightroom
Editing a true Bayer RAW file is different from editing a standard JPEG or an Apple ProRAW file. Because the file contains pure, unadulterated sensor data without computational enhancements, it requires a different approach in Adobe Lightroom.
Step 1: The Starting Point
When you open a Bayer RAW DNG in Lightroom, it will likely look flat, slightly noisy, and perhaps a bit dark. This is normal. It means you have the maximum amount of data to work with.
Step 2: Exposure and Contrast
Unlike ProRAW, which already has Smart HDR applied, you need to manually establish the contrast curve.
- Adjust the Exposure slider to set the overall brightness.
- Add Contrast (usually +10 to +30) to bring the image to life.
- Carefully lower the Highlights to recover sky details and raise the Shadows to reveal darker areas.
Step 3: Managing Noise (The Organic Way)
Bayer RAW files retain the natural noise of the iPhone sensor. Many photographers love this film-like grain. If you prefer a cleaner look:
- Go to the Detail panel.
- Apply Color Noise Reduction (usually around 10-20) to remove color blotches in the shadows.
- Apply a small amount of Luminance Noise Reduction (10-15), but be careful not to overdo it—aggressive noise reduction creates the "plastic" look we are trying to avoid.
Step 4: Color Grading
This is where Bayer RAW shines. Because the colors haven't been pre-baked by Apple's algorithms, they respond beautifully to grading.
- Adjust the White Balance using the Temp and Tint sliders. You have complete flexibility here because the white balance wasn't locked in at the time of capture.
- Use the Color Mix tool to isolate and enhance specific colors (e.g., deepening the blues in the sky, or warming up skin tones).
- Apply a cinematic Color Grade by adding warmth to the highlights and a cool tone to the shadows (Teal & Orange).
